The site chosen for my current design project is an area in the centre of the historic core of L'Aquila. It consists of three important piazze, and their surrounding buildings. These are: Piazza del Palazzo, Piazza Santa Margherita (also called Piazza dei Gesuiti), and Piazza Vincenzo Rivera (previously Piazza dell'Annunziata). Piazza Palazzo in particular is an important historical point in the city, acting as L'Aquila's civic heart since it's foundation in the 13th century. However, the dialogue between the three spaces is very interesting and the buildings connecting them have the potential to be redeveloped in interesting ways to revitalise these spaces as one entity. Piazza Vincenzo Rivera is a particularly complex space; being the smallest of the three squares, it is surrounded by a number of smaller buildings and open spaces so has a sense of being much larger and more open. It could also act as a feeding point into the the west of the city centre, which is currently wholly abandoned and in a poor condition post-earthquake.

I met Paolo Muzi, the head of L'Aquila Italia Nostra, on site on the 28th August. We explored the site together and he gave me an interesting insight into some of the most important structures and features of the piazze.
