Croxley Barn Action Weekend, SPAB Volunteering - 26 May 2018
On 26 May 2018, the SPAB held an ‘Action Weekend’ at Croxley Great Barn. I jumped on the opportunity to visit the Barn again, having spent a week there during the 2014 SPAB Working Party. It was a delight to return once again as a volunteer to see progress and lend a hand for continued maintenance.
The weekend involved talks, tours, presentations and craft demonstrations by many brilliant SPAB experts who kindly lent their time and shared their knowledge. I assisted with hosting the many visitors to the Barn, as well as general upkeep and clearance of overgrown bushes. In true SPAB tradition, there was also a fabulous BBQ and drinks to raise money for the Three Rivers Museum.
I took a moment to reminisce about my previous visit to Croxley Barn in 2014, when I was introduced to lime mortar and re-pointing by Anthony Goode. It was with great sadness that I learnt of Anthony’s passing this year - he was a patient and inspiring teacher who to this day I thank for my enthusiasm for lime.
